Passing Along Good Music

There is a widespread abuse of children that most people don't know about. Our children are being exposed to junk that passes itself off as music. I don't know about you, but I consider that abusive. Okay, really, seriously, I don't. Just want to clarify that to those who may be actually taking me seriously. Still, it's a crying shame what our kids are listening to these days.

Good music is good music. We should be letting our children listen to the many great artists that are out there. Forget about Beiber! How about The Civil Wars!!!

Gregg came home tonight with two tickets to a concert that will take place in the great city of Houston on March 19th. The musical greatness that we will have the privilege of seeing is none other than the Civil Wars. Oh my word, excited doesn't even cover how I feel about this opportunity.

The concert will be held at a small venue so there literally won't be a bad seat in the place. To be in the same breathing space of these amazing artists is mind boggling to me. Lord, I can't wait!!!

Oh, and let me just say for the record, their CD Barton Hollow is a-ma-zing!!! Pure genius folks. So, if you haven't already, please rush out and buy their CD. Even though some of the songs have older natured topics they are tastefully done. So, please, don't deprive your children of this amazing talent. Let them experience what great, dare I say genius, music sounds like.

I Like My Rock And Roll!!!

I have a major eclectic taste in music but deep down in my heart, I'm a rocker chick. This surprises people for some reason. I'm a pretty straight laced person. I follow all the rules (well, most of them). I prefer order over chaos. But I still like my Rock And Roll!!!

I had a rare moment of freedom in the car earlier today ~ just me with my music blaring on the stereo (which happened to be AC/DC), and the windows rolled down. The perfect way to enjoy a drive alone when the weather is nice outside. I was driving along, enjoying my moment of freedom and jamming to the tune of Back In Black, when a car pulled up next to me with two guys in it. I could see the passenger was enjoying my music as we sat waiting for a light to change. And then he turned his head and did a double take. I guess he wasn't expecting to see a soccer mom behind the wheel of a car that is playing a classic AC/DC song. And here's where I busted a gut, laughing my tail off as I left it at that red stop light ~ the guys in the car gave me a "Rock ON!" hand sign. I guess they approved of my music choice.

Rocker Chick

We have an eclectic taste in music in our family. If you look at our stacks and stacks (and stacks, and stacks, and stacks) of Cd's, you'll see a little bit of everything in there. But there IS a predominate theme in our music repertoire and that would be good ole' Rock N' Roll. So it's no wonder that we've got a little rocker chick in our midst. Rock On Baby!

As the wholesome (cough, cough) band AC/DC sang...
Rock 'n' roll ain't no pollution
Rock 'n' roll is just rock 'n' roll!

All The Pretty Little Ponies

This song has been floating around in my head for days now. I love it and Violet seems to enjoy it herself as I sing this to her. Here is the link to the actual song.

All The Pretty Little Ponies
Hush-a-Bye
Dont You Cry
Go To Sleep My Little Baby
When You Wake You Shall Have
All The Pretty Little Ponies

In Your Bed
Mamma Said
Babies Riding Off To Dream Land
One By One
They've Begun
Dance And Prance For Little Baby

Blacks And Bays
Dapples And Grays
Running In The Night
When You Wake
You Shall Have
All The Pretty Little Ponies

Can't You See The Little Ponies
Dance Before Your Eyes
All The Pretty Little Ponies
Will Be There When Your Arise

Can't You See The Little Ponies
Dance Before Your Eyes
All The Pretty Little Ponies
Will Be There When Your Arise

Hush-a-Bye
Don't You Cry
Go To Sleep My Little Baby
When You Wake
You Shall Have
All The Pretty Little Ponies

All The Pretty Little Ponies

(Hush-Bye Don't You Cry)

It's a beautiful song, almost haunting really as it has been haunting my every waking moment. I love it.

Top of The Sweetest Chart

One of the sweetest things in this world is listening to a child sing. Seriously, listening to a child sing can melt my heart faster than a hot summer sun can melt butter. I think it has to rank up there with angels singing.

Violet has recently learned the song "This Old Man" and has been singing it all day. Her verses are a bit off but she makes them work. We never know what she'll tack on the song but whatever it is it's always fun listening to her.

Games We Play

Violet loves it when we sing "Itsy-Bitsy Spider" because she knows there is going to be a massive amount of tickling that follows the song. I'm not sure how I came up with this little game but it has been a fabulous hit in our family.

Here's how it goes...
as you sing, "Itsy-bitsy spider went up the water spout", we use our fingers to crawl up Violet's leg and torso.

Then, "Down came the rain", we tap Violet's head gently (as if it's rain falling on her head)

"And washed the spider out!", our hand rushes down the front of Violet's torso.

"Up comes the sun", we move our hand as if it's the sun coming up, making sure that it stops at her face.

"And dried up all the rain", we rub our hand on Violet's face, as if we're drying it off.

"And the itsy-bitsy spider went up the spout again!", we use our fingers to crawl up Violet's body again and stop in the crook of her chin where giggles spring forth!

The Praise of Children

Last night, on our way home from church, we put one of Violet's cds in the player. She was tired and just a little cranky and we wanted to make the drive home as pleasant as possible. As soon as the music began playing Violet began singing. Gregg and I sang along for a little while and then we quieted down so that we could enjoy listening to our precious little one sing praises to our Lord.

I don't know this for sure, but I imagine that the voices of the angels that sing praises to God sound alot like the voices of children. Nothing sounds sweeter, or can bring a tear to my eye faster, than listening to children sing praise songs. The innocence in their voices makes the praise purer than anything we can offer as adults. Yes, God enjoys the voices of all His children singing praise to Him, young and old alike. It just seems to me that the voices of the children are more pleasing to Him. Why? Because their singing praise songs is a sign that they just don't sing them at church but at home as well. Children who raise their voices to God have been taught the importance of such things.

I'm not trying to "toot my own horn" but I feel like Gregg and I are doing something right with Violet whenever we hear her sing praise songs. It shows me that we're making her eternal life, not just her physical one, a priority. It shows me that she is learning something good from us and not just our bad habits. The greatest gift that we, as parents, can give our children is a love for Christ and to lead them to Him. Violet's songs of praise are just the first step in her knowing Him. We'll continue to lead her down the rest of the path to the best of our abilities. The final step of acceptance is Violet's, but we can help her take it.

Musical Genes

Nothing can be sweeter than listening to your child happily sing along to music that they love. We got Violet a bible-song-cd and she absolutely loves it. It's amazing how quickly Violet has learned the majority of the songs on this cd. Guess she's taken after her parent's musical genes... she definitely loves music and nothing can change a bad mood into a good one faster than music.
